Lot no. 229
Trial of Prince Napoleon-Louis Bonaparte and his co-defendants before the Court of Peers. Paris,, Bohaire, , 1840.. In-8 (21,2 x 12,8 cm), red chagrin, crowned imperial eagle in the centre, sentence and plate decoration framed by a double gilt fillet on the boards, smooth spine decorated with gilt interlacing, gilt edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this pro-Napoleonic report, published in the same year as the trial following the attempted uprising in Boulogne-sur-mer by the future Napoleon III. A portrait-frontispiece of Bonaparte in prison illustrates the work. A fine present binding with a crowned imperial eagle, stamped with this solemn sentence: "To Louis Napoleon, Vengeance for Treason To you vile traitors, To us your heads To you Tyrant and your agents, The Kingslayer is here, waiting for you." A handwritten note on the flyleaf indicates that the copy was presented to the future Napoleon III, an assertion supported by the presence of this binding. Few freckles and stains, a very small marginal wetness on two leaves. Minor damage to the second cover. Provenance - Napoleon III (ex. present?) - Osenat sale, Christopher Forbes Collection, 6 March 2016, lot n° 18.
