Prospero Mallerini (1761 - 1838) - Scene of Roman History Oil on canvas 116 x 158 cm The painting depicts a scene from Roman history set in Republican or early Imperial times, centred on an episode of clemency or intercession. In the centre of the composition stands a young warlord in antique armour, with golden breastplate, red cloak and plumed helmet; the gesture of his raised hand, measured and suspenseful, suggests authority tempered by moderation; in front of him a mature man, in simple green and white clothing, leans out with an argumentative and pleading gesture; next to him, a kneeling woman and a child holding out his arms accentuate the moral character of the episode. On the left is an armiger with a military insignia bearing the initials "SPQV" (probably a variant of SPQR), a clear reference to the formula senatus populusque romanus, an element that points decisively towards a Roman setting. The composition is constructed by contrasting groups: the solemn verticality of the commander is opposed by the dynamic diagonal of the supplicants. The dark backdrop concentrates the attention on the protagonists, while the bright sky and the architecture in the background lend spatial breadth and perspective order. The attribution to Prospero Mallerini is confirmed by a comparison with the altarpiece in the Church of San Matteo, a documented work by the artist. In both, similarities can be detected in the anatomical construction of the figures, which are solid but idealised, in the rendering of faces with regular features and in the use of a clear, homogenous light. Also similar is the linear definition of the drapery and the scenographic setting with figures arranged on parallel planes according to a rational and classical order. In the absence of specific attributes that would allow a precise identification of the episode (e.g. references to Scipio, Coriolanus or other protagonists of Roman history), the subject is prudentially defined as an episode of clemency of a Roman condottiere.Within coeval frame.
