Lot no. 190
[PROUST (Marcel)]. RUSKIN (John). The Amiens Bible. Paris, Mercure de France, 1904. - RUSKIN (John). Sesame and the Lilies. Treasures of kings, gardens of queens. Paris, Mercure de France, 1906. 2 volumes in-12, paperback, collective folder and slipcase (Loutrel). First edition of the French translations, with notes and preface, by Marcel Proust. La Bible d'Amiens is accompanied by a long theoretical preface (pp. 7-95) which Proust had first published in April 1900 in the Mercure de France. Sésame et les Lys also includes a very important preface by Proust, entitled Sur la lecture, which first appeared in La Renaissance latine on 15 June 1905 and was subsequently republished in Pastiches et mélanges in 1919. This text is crucial because it contains the seeds of the narrative structure of La Recherche. First edition copies on publisher's paper, numbered at the press. Only 7 copies of La Bible d'Amiens and 12 of Sésame et les Lys were printed on hollande. Minor repairs to the covers.
