Accounts of the routes climbed by Victor and Pierre Puiseux, forerunners of French mountaineering. In particular, there is an account of the ascent of Pelvoux and a story of the conquest of Mont-Rose (at the head of volume II). An important work on the beginnings of unguided mountaineering. Pierre Puiseux (1855-1928) was a French mountaineer who, along with his father Victor Puiseux (1820-1883), played an important role in the development of unguided mountaineering in France. In particular, Victor Puiseux is credited with the second ascent of Pelvoux (the highest point of which took his name) in 1848, as well as one of the first serious attempts to climb Mont-Rose from Zermatt in 1847. In 1887, Pierre Puiseux made the first ascent of the north-north-west face of Grande Casse, as well as climbing Mont-Blanc without a guide in 1880. Émile Levasseur (Paris 1828 - 1911) was a French historian, economist and geographer. A former student at the École Normale Supérieure, he passed the agrégation de lettres in 1854 and defended his doctoral thesis the same year.
