Title printed in black and red. French edition of the chivalric poem, clearly inspired by the Chanson de Roland, entitled Morgante maggiore, written around 1470 at the request of Lucrezia Tornabuoni, the mother of Lorenzo de' Medici. The text was first published in Italian in Venice in 1481. The giant Morgant and his two brothers persecute Christians. Defeated by Roland (Orlando), Morgant converts to Christianity and becomes the friend of his conqueror. The last chapter indicates that the French translation was completed in 1517, the text having been published for the first time in our language in 1519. Pascale Mounier, in "Morgant le géant: mise en livre et réception programmée de Pulci en France", cites two editions by Lotrian (no. 4 and no. 5), as do the other bibliographies consulted. Only the second edition (circa 1536, according to the state of the material used) is in the name of Alain Lotrian alone. However, our copy does not correspond to the description given by these references and remains unknown to bibliographers in the current state of our research. A fine copy, from a fine edition, skilfully washed at the time of binding by Chambole-Duru. Provenance : - Baron Léopold Double (ex-libris, sale in 1863 and 20 May 1881). - Robert Hoe (bookplate, sale in 1887). - Sotheby's sale, 5 December 1905, no. 1558 (acquired by B. F. Stevens). - John B. Stetson Jr (Anderson Galleries sale, 17 April 1935, no. 294). - Georges Petit, Château de Grandvoir. Bibliography : Brunet, IV, 974. Bechtel cites two editions by Lotrian (M-511, M-512), but not this one. Renouard, Éditions parisiennes du XVIe s., no. 253 (does not give a collation).
