In the painting The Return from Mass , which was exhibited at the 1893-1894 Exhibition of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Florence, Cambogi ventures into a daring close-up, depicting three young women and a smoking boy in a half-length cut. These figures, set in lush, luminous landscape, have their faces caressed by the sun's rays and move smiling and boldly towards the viewer as if they wanted to step out of the canvas. It is a painting with a photographer's cut that Gambogi resolves with light brushstrokes, elaborating what can rightly be considered one of the artist's most impressionistic pages.
