Provenance: - Probably created before the original in the Duc d'Orléans collection, late 18th century. - Swiss private ownership. The painting is based on Raphael's famous composition, which is in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh (inv. no. NGL 065.46) and was part of the collection of the Duc d'Orléans in the late 18th century, who is known to have made his collection accessible to artists in order to create copies. The precious walnut painting support also indicates that it was made in France in the late 18th century and the antique frame emphasises the high value of this copy.
