RAOUL-ROCHETTE (Désiré). Pompeii. Choice of unpublished monuments. 1st part, Maison du Poète Tragique - and 2nd part, Peintures spécialement de décors d'intérieurs. Paris, [les Auteurs, C. Leconte et Desesserts], 1828-1839 - [1843'], [followed by], ARTAUD (François). Description of a mosaic representing circus games. Lyon, Ballanche, 1806. 2 works in 3 parts in 1 vol. broadside bound in half-box sand, spine ribbed decorated and gilt, double fillet stamped on the boards (Period binding). [1] f., 28 pp. - [1] f. - 4] ff. 20 pp. The whole of our copy is decorated with a total of 51 engraved plates out of text enhanced with watercolours except for 2 of them). The first part, Maison du Poète, was published under subscription in seven issues between 1828 and 1839, totalling 27 watercolour plates. Our copy presents a rare complete version of this series, with an enhanced engraved title, an engraved table of plates and the 27 numbered watercolour plates. The second part, Peintures des décors d'intérieurs, appeared without explanatory text, in a more modest format, with only a title and 27 plates. Our copy contains 23 plates, also watercoloured, accompanied by the title leaf (4 plates are missing). Conceived by Jules Bouchet and Désiré Raoul-Rochette, then curator of antiquities at the Royal Library, this work, initiated following the discovery of the House of the Tragic Poet in 1824, aimed to document as yet unpublished or little-studied buildings in Pompeii. Bouchet's plates are among the most valuable representations of Pompeii before its restoration. Very uncommon on the market. Our copy presents, bound in the suite, the short 1806 publication of some twenty pages by François Artaud describing an antique mosaic of a circus scene. The plate bound in this part is not that of the original publication but is taken from the work Mosaïques de Lyon et des Départemens Meridionaux de la France by the same author. A pleasant copy much sought after for its illustrations despite some browned plates. Good condition, a few browned plates and foxing to a few text ff. Binding : Upper board partially split at tail Spine soiled and stained with a few superficial scratches Spine slightly oiled Boards : 2 browned boards (first part) Several plates with partial oxidation of varying density Some plates with light foxing and/or spotting in margins and more rarely in illustration Minor soiling to some plates, including the engraved title The paper of the plates is of varying quality throughout The fold-out plate showing the mosaic of Artaud's text has a small tear along the fold, which is not missing.
