RARE ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE AMPHORA WITH FIGHTING HOPLITES. Ca. 510 BC. A black-figure amphora on a disc foot. The short neck is surmounted by a fitted lid with a tall central knob and twin strap handles rise from the shoulder. The neck is panelled with upright palmettes, and the shoulder with a frieze of tongues. The main body shows on one side two confronting hoplites, each with a round shield and Corinthian helmet; the reverse bears a pair of hoplites similarly armed. A continuous flower-bud chain runs around the lower body, which finishes in a broad glazed zone and a foot decorated with rays.
