RARE AZTEC / MIXTEC TURQUOISE MOSAIC MASK OF JAGUAR Ca. AD 1400 - 1521. A mask formed from a stucco core inlaid on the exterior with turquoise tesserae. The wide, circular eyes are set with dark stone inlays. The nostrils are cut through the surface, forming two openings between the raised nasal bridge and projecting snout. The open mouth reveals a row of teeth and two prominent fangs bordered by a red mosaic. A small cluster of red is set on the brow. The reverse is hollow. Size: 125mm x 120mm; Weight: 535g Provenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014; Ex. Collibri Group, 2010; Ex. private American collection of C. Arundel; previously in a private collection of his father Ian Arundel since the 1960s. A copy of the Affidavit will accompany the purchase. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
