RARE BOW BROOCH - former Kofler-Truniger collection Slavic, 7th century AD. Gilt bronze. Semicircular head plate with seven fan-shaped ribbed palmettes above a wedge-shaped base plate, with rich notch carving and with bird heads with blue glass flow on the sides and three human masks at the brooch base. 12.5 × 7 cm. Gilding rubbed. Metal overlays with glass flow partly missing. Pin missing. Provenance: - Collection of Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger (1918–1999 & 1918–1999), Lucerne before 1960 (inv. no. K 8047 AI). - Swiss private collection, Lucerne, acquired from the above in ca. 1974. - By inheritance in the same Swiss family collection, Lucerne. Exhibited: Kunsthaus Zurich, Collection E. and M. The brooch on offer is of a type that belongs to an interesting group of related bronze mask brooches from the late 6th and 7th centuries found in the Balkan countries. J. Werner presented these brooches of the so-called “Sparta-Linkuhnen-Cosovenii” type in 1960 (Germania 38), including an illustration of the brooch on offer from the Kofler-Truninger Collection.
