RARE CHEFCHAOUEN EMBROIDERY
Morocco, 18th or 19th century
Mustard yellow silk rectangle, embroidered with polychrome, red, blue, green, violet and ivory silk threads, the lower part showing a dense ornamental field with stylised geometric and floral motifs organised around a central cruciform medallion, the upper part showing a schematic mihrab outlined with embroidered bands.
Size: 70 x 34 cm
A similar example of this rare type of embroidery, typical of Tetouan and Chaouen, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 1970.72). See also the following lot.
