RARE BYZANTINE GOLD PENDANT WITH CARNELIAN INTAGLIO DEPICTING THEODOSIUS. Ca. AD 370 - 450. A Byzantine gold pendant in the shape of a bell, that secures a large carnelian intaglio. The intaglio depicts the Byzantine emperor, Theodosius. The figure is shown in profile, dressed in a long tunic wearing a crown; the facial features are typical of the early Byzantine period. The bust is surrounded by an inscription with a cross at the centre. On the top of the pendant is a double hoop. For similar see: MET Museum Accession Number: 04.35.18.
