Lot no. 696
RARE BYZANTINE SILVER-GILT BOWL WITH TWO ANGELS AND CHRISTOGRAM.
Ca. AD 400 - 600
A very fine silver bowl of shallow hemispherical form, with a plain rim and rounded base. The interior is finely engraved and parcel-gilt, centred on a medallion depicting two confronting angels flanking a wreath enclosing a Chi-Rho Christogram. At the centre of the bowl is also a later re-engraved emblem of Sassanian origin, strongly suggesting that the vessel entered Sassanian circulation—either through trade or as captured booty—and was marked accordingly. An exceptionally rare and historically significant object, illustrating cultural exchange and appropriation between Late Antique Christian and Sassanian worlds.
Size: 230mm x 40mm; Weight: 360g.
Provenance: From the private collection of Mr. R. Unger; previously with a London gallery; acquired in the 1970s on the UK art market.
