The inside pages show the card number (no. 16425), the holder's identity, posting and rank, and the holder's autograph signature "C. de Gaulle". Signed by the Ministry's delegated official and the delegate for the SNCF's Director General. Photograph of Colonel Charles de Gaulle with "CARTE D'IDENTITE" postmark. The last page with an extract from the regulations. B. E. Year 1939. Historical background: During the pivotal year of 1939, Colonel de Gaulle was given command of the Fifth Army's tanks in September, "a post that should have gone to a general officer if there had been one competent enough", said his son Philippe in his Memoirs. During this period, the general travelled between the army's headquarters in Wangenbourg, La Boisserie and Paris.
