RARE COMMEMORATIVE BOX FOR THE LEGION OF HONOUR
Cast and engraved specially for General de Gaulle by Albert de Jaeger and the Monnaie de Paris
In gilt and chased bronze.
Lid decorated with the Star of the Order, centre with the profile of Bonaparte, First Consul, signed "Jaeger".
The reverse of the lid is decorated with five stars of the Legion of Honour and the inscription :
"This casket dedicated to the order of the Legion of Honour was chiselled by Albert de Jaeger and specially cast for the order of the Legion of Honour.

The inside of the box is decorated with a series of stylised eagles, Phrygian bonnets, fleurs-de-lis and the monogram "RF".
The sides of the box feature alternating views and symbols relating to the Legion of Honour (including the Hôtel de Salm), as well as quotations from Napoleon Bonaparte ("There is no compromise with honour" - "The first of the virtues is devotion to the Fatherland") and General de Gaulle ("Glory is given only to those who have always dreamed of it" - "The most important and noblest function in the temporal order, I mean the service of the State").
