RARE COSTA RICAN POLYCHROME EFFIGY VESSEL OF A JAGUAR Ca. AD 800 - 1250.
A large bichrome pottery vessel with a carinated midsection and a slightly pointed base supported by two forelegs and an extended tail forming the third support. The vessel has a broad, cylindrical neck and a jaguar protome at the centre front, showing an open mouth with exposed fangs and a projecting tongue. The animal wears a serrated bib flanked by looped handles that extend from the shoulders. Each leg is painted with repeating motifs of stylised zoomorphic creatures, and the upper register is encircled by a complex frieze of interlocking geometric patterns in red and black.
