Lot no. 140
Rare Allen & Wheelock USA percussion revolver, patented on April 16, 1845, in double action and medium frame, caliber 32.
Made in the late 1850s in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only about 500 examples of this revolver would have been produced in all medium frame variants, this one bearing serial number 124. A very fine example of a transitional revolver, linking Allen's early "pepperbox" revolvers (in which each barrel chamber had its own barrel) to his later single-barrelled models with conventional barrels. This is one of the few early threaded-axis models, with excellent markings, including a deep, crisp scene of hunting dogs chasing a deer. The hammer bears the Allen patent date of 1845.
Good overall condition, working mechanism. Proudly shows the marks of time and wear. The metal has developed a nice patina and the plates show no cracks or breaks. The barrel still has heavy scratches.
