RARE GLASS NAVAL COMMEMORATIVE in colourless glass cut and engraved with the wheel. Circular bowl on leg with faceted knot. Cut base and leg. Base circular foot. On one side is engraved the dedication "Success to His Majestys Gun Brig Basilesk" is engraved on one side. representing the brigantine ship the Basilik; The other side is engraved with a medallion monogrammed SG (for Samuel Gooch, first commander of the Basilik) under the tortilcrest of the Gooch family. A faint signature engraved on the knot of the glass: "John Williams (?) - Gunt". England, early 19th century, circa 1801. Height: 14.8 cm - Diameter at foot: 9.1 cm (tiny chip at foot) HMS Basilisk was a gun-brig type warship of the Royal Navy gun-brig (Bloodhound class warship built by Randall at Rotherhithe and launched in 1801. It saw brief service at the end of the French Revolutionary French Revolutionary Wars, with most of her service during the during the Napoleonic Wars, protecting convoys from privateers, carrying out close coastal surveillance and capturing enemy enemy coastal vessels. It was sold for demolition in 1815. Our glass is a unique piece which was probably created to mark the the occasion of Lieutenant Samuel Grooch's Basilik by Lieutenant Samuel Grooch in April 1801. Samuel Gooch held this position until 1803.
