RARE VIKING SILVER HORSE CHAMFRON - FULL REPORT Ca. AD 900 - 1100. A Viking silver chamfron made from a single sheet of hammered silver. It is embossed with typical medieval Scandinavian motifs such as triangles and dots in a geometric pattern. There are also 23 hammered hemispherical studs driven into the metal with convex chisels. There are eyelets on the top and sides to attach a liner or for suspension fixings. A chamfron is an important element of mediaeval horse armour, designed to protect a horse’s head while charging. Size: 460mm x 195mm; Weight: 1.4Kg. Provenance: From the M.S. collection since 2018; formerly, in the collection of Tylee Widing since 1991. Property of Eric Haydoc since 1982; in possession of Vladislav Afonin since 1967; previously, in the Austin Bownbeck’s collection until 1967. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. This piece comes with an XRF laboratory report from the independent Belgian laboratory Hebolabo. This piece is accompanied by a historical report from Alessandro Neri, an international Cultural Heritage expert based in Florence, Italy.
