Lot no. 9
Extremely rare blown crystal glass service attributed to Baccarat, early 20th c., reminiscent of the Byzantine engraved model, engraved with the coat of arms of Orléans, surmounted by the crown of the sons of France, girded with the collars of the King's orders, unsigned, comprising 225 pieces: 30 champagne glasses, 20 water glasses, 30 red wine glasses, 30 white wine glasses, 30 coloured wine glasses, 10 coupelles, 16 small soliflores vases and 13 carafes, 22 sauternes glasses and 24 liqueur glasses. This decoration, known as Byzantine, is listed in the Baccarat catalogue of 1916, where it is used on several shapes of glasses and decanters. On this set, the wheel engraving consists of elegantly arranged interlacing foliage, punctuated by medallions in the centre of which are engraved coats of arms bearing the Orléans coat of arms. This decoration combines the ornamental refinement characteristic of the 1910s with a heraldic tradition emblematic of the prestige of major commissions. As with most of the pieces produced before 1936, they are unsigned, as was customary in the crystal industry for dinner services. Bringing together such a vast array of glasses in a single service is a rare opportunity on the market, and underlines the remarkable quality of this production. Slight flaws in the gilding on several glasses 1 chipped water glass Given the heraldic usage and the family context, the order could have been placed by either the Duke of Montpensier Ferdinand d'Orléans (1884-1924) or the Duke of Vendôme Emmanuel d'Orléans (1872-1931), both of whom are likely to have commissioned a service bearing the arms of the Duke of Orléans. AT THE TABLE OF HIS MAJESTY KING LOUIS-PHILIPPE IER Piguet is honoured to present an exceptional collection of over 1,300 pieces of porcelain, silverware and crystalware bearing the coat of arms of France that belonged to His Majesty King Louis-Philippe I and his descendants. The Sèvres porcelain service known as the "Service des Princes" comprises 480 pieces, and the Christofle menagère includes more than 630 pieces, mostly bearing the French coat of arms and marked with the seal of the Château d'Eu. In addition, there are more than 230 pieces of a crystal service attributed to Baccarat bearing the Orléans coat of arms surmounted by the crown of the sons of France girded with the collars of the King's orders. The ensemble is of remarkable quality and consistency. It came from Louis-Philippe, King of the French, and his descendants. These services illustrate both the elegance of royal and princely daily life and the refined taste that characterised the Orléans dynasty in the 19th century. The goldsmiths' and silversmiths' services naturally found their place at the Château d'Eu in Normandy, King Louis-Philippe's country residence and the very heart of Orléans family life. Inherited from the Dukes of Penthièvre, the château became a holiday and reception venue under the July monarchy, where the art of living of the Court was on display. They accompanied meals and official ceremonies, helping to showcase the Sovereign's prestige. The Château d'Eu also hosted major diplomatic events, including the visits of Queen Victoria in 1843 and 1845, symbols of Franco-British friendship. As privileged witnesses of this era, these lots embody the measured splendour, tradition and enlightened refinement of the House of Orléans. It is extremely rare to find such a complete service in such an exceptional state of preservation. The set has been kept in a Swiss collection for over 50 years. Lots 8 to 10 will go on sale in the auction room on Wednesday 10 December 2025 at 6pm. The auction of lots 1250 and 1251 (Christofle) and lots 1385 to 1398 (Service des Princes) will end on Monday 8 December at 12 noon. See page 100. Exceptional blown crystal glass service attributed to Baccarat, model with Byzantine engraving This exceptional set of crystal glasses attributed to Baccarat, engraved with the Orléans coat of arms surmounted by the crown of the sons of France girded with the collars of the King's orders, represents a unique opportunity on the current market in terms of quantity, quality, state of preservation and provenance. This decoration, known as Byzantine, is listed in the Baccarat catalogue of 1916, where it is used on several shapes of glasses and decanters. On this set, the wheel engraving consists of elegantly arranged interlacing foliage, punctuated by oval medallions in the centre of which are engraved coats of arms bearing the Orléans coat of arms. This decoration combines the ornamental refinement characteristic of the 1910s with a heraldic tradition emblematic of the prestige of large commissions. As with most of the pieces produced before 1936, they are unsigned, in accordance with the custom in the crystal industry for dinner services. The coat of arms engraved on each piece is probably that of the Duc de Montpensier, grandson of Louis-Phillippe, or the Duc de Vendôme, Emmanuel d'Orléans. The quality of the workmanship and the consistency of the decoration suggest a special commission, in the tradition of personalised services produced for the great princely houses. The service comprises glasses in seven different sizes, as well as soliflores, bowls and decanters. It has been kept in a Swiss collection for over 50 years.
