Lot no. 57
RAYNAL abbé, DIDEROT, D'HOLBACH... Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes. Genève, Pellet, 1780; 5 vol. in-4 (252 x 195 mm) including an atlas, marbled green calf, smooth spines decorated with gilt fleurons, fillets on the boards (Period bindings). A history of the colonies and international trade, but above all a virulent denunciation of colonialism, slavery and despotism in all its forms. THIRD EDITION IN-4°, IN THE ORIGINAL PART, THE BEST AND MOST COMPLETE, even more "committed" than the previous editions, drawn up with the collaboration of Diderot and d'Holbach for the "philosophical" part. It was condemned to be burnt by the Parliament of Paris. The atlas is complete with 50 maps and 24 repl. tables, which are often missing. The portrait and the 4 figures by Moreau le Jeune have not been bound in this copy but there is in addition 1 double plate showing Aztecs and 4 repl. maps from Robertson's History of America: Map of Mexico (2), of South America, of the Countries situated on the South Sea from Panama to Guayaquil. VERY GOOD EXAMPLE; some sections yellowed.
