This major work by Abbé Raynal (1713-1796) traces the history of the American colonies since the discovery of the continent, highlighting their impact on European culture and trade. The text stands out as a pamphlet against slavery and an uncompromising portrait of the colonial system. This collective work, conceived in an encyclopaedic spirit, benefited from the contributions of several collaborators, including Diderot and d'Holbach for the philosophical part.
