Lot no. 223
[RAYNAL (Guillaume-Thomas). Histoire philosophique et politique des établissemens et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes. Genève, J.-L. Pellet, 1780. 4 vols. - Atlas of all known parts of the globe. S.l.n.d. 1 vol. Together 5 volumes in-4, shagreened basane, smooth spine decorated, daffodil edges (Binding of the period). Third and best edition, partly original, of Abbé Raynal's masterpiece. The illustrations include a portrait of the author by Charles-Nicolas Cochin and 4 frontispieces by Jean-Michel Moreau, copper-engraved by Delaunay, Simonet and Delignon, in the first edition, plus an atlas of 50 double-page maps by Rigobert Bonne and 23 fold-out statistical tables. A veritable encyclopaedia of European commercial ventures in India and the New World, Histoire des deux Indes by Abbé Raynal (1713-1796) is also a scathing indictment of slavery, offering an uncompromising picture of the colonial world. The work was placed on the Index by the Church and condemned to destruction by the Paris Parliament. According to Grimm, a significant part of the work is not by Raynal, but by Diderot, particularly the philosophical pages. Three jaws cracked in vol. I, one headband trimmed in vol. II, minor spotting, tear without missing a folding table, scattered freckles. Feugère, n°44 - Cohen, 854 - Goldsmiths, n°12007 - Kress, B.314 - Sabin, n°68081 - En français dans le texte, n°166.
