Lot no. 170
REBOUX Paul (1877-1963). Les Matinales. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1897; in-12, almond-green morocco, top cover decorated with a branch of violet flowers, monogram HR gilt in the centre, ribbed spine, interior roulette, gilt head, cover (J. Méheut). First edition of Reboux's first collection, published at the age of twenty and posthumously dedicated to Henry Regnault. It bears an autograph quatrain from Reboux to his friend on the false title. We have not identified this person, perhaps a childhood friend who died very young according to the quatrain. It cannot be the painter of the same name who fell to the enemy in 1871. The binding bears the dedicatee's monogram.
☞ One of 10 on Japon (No. 3).
Ex-libris Julia Bartet (1854-1941), who made her theatrical debut in l'Arlésienne in 1872. She played an important role on the literary scene and inspired many playwrights. Her birth name was Jeanne Regnault; Henry may have been her brother.
Green binding faded to brown. We know of another copy (Cuvillier's) on Japon with a similar binding. They were probably made at the author's request for his relatives.
