Redouté, Pierre-Joseph A magnificent work by one of the greatest botanical painters. With 144 stipple engravings, printed in color and finished by hand, retouchées au pinceau. - Contemp. half morocco with lettering to spine (rubbed and bumped). - This masterpiece of Redouté's later years is one of the finest of all collections of flower prints, showing to full advantage the brilliancy of colour printing; originally published without text (Dunthorne). The fruit and flowers depicted - among them roses, irises, amaryllises a.o. - were grown in the Malmaison gardens of the Empress Josephine. The best engravers created the prints based on Redouté's original watercolors. The success of these illustrations depends to a large extent on the highly complex stipple engraving technique. Minute dots were placed on the copper plate. The plate was then 'painted' with colors, and the ink adhered to each of the dots. Afterwards details and nuances were added by hand watercolor pigments. The 'Table alphabétique et explicative', which appeared in 1833, gives brief descriptions and history of the plants. - The plates (ca. 37x26 cm) are numbered 1-144 (not printed 25, 67 and 135; added: 59bis, 89bis and 114bis;). - 2 plates, Titel and 1. leaves margins partly cropped closer, slightly foxed (mostly to the protective tissue between text and illustr.) - An excellent complete copy with finely coloured plates.
