Lot no. 63
REDOUTÉ Pierre-Joseph. Reunion of 44 botanical plates, representing the flowers of the park of Malmaison and the park of the château de Navarre (Eure) in 1812. 44 original prints (36 x 56 cm), 1812-1813. Thirty-five plates were drawn by the famous Pierre-Joseph Redouté and nine by Pancrace Bessa, then engraved and printed in colour (sometimes slightly enhanced). These superb plates were commissioned for Empress Joséphine by the botanist Aimé Bonpland (1773-1858), intendant general of the Malmaison estates. They are taken from the first edition of the Description des plantes rares cultivées à Navarre et à Malmaison, published in Paris by the printer Pierre Didot in 1813. The complete work comprises 64 plates accompanied by a printed explanatory text. A good copy. Spotting to some plates. The descriptive text of some of the plates and some of the publisher's paper covers are enclosed. Text leaves slightly faded and traces of use to the folders.
