The German artist Reinhold Koeppel created paintings and drawings as well as book illustrations. His subject is often nature with forest workers, shepherds, farmers and stone hammers. Koeppel also produced pictures as results of his voyages to Spain, Italy and France. From 1905 to 1906 he trained as an art dealer. In Dresden he served as a Einjährig-Freiwilliger (volunteer for one year) in the königlich sächsisches Leibregiment (The King's Own Saxon Regiment). In 1907 he spent several weeks in Waldhäuser in the Bavarian Forest, where he began working as a painter. In 1908 he bought the old Waldhäuser schoolhouse and made it his home. Koeppel trained himself self-taught, including on annual study trips to Munich. In 1909, he published his first picture "Spring Storm on the High Moor" in the magazine "Jugend" (Youth). Koeppel worked as an art dealer in the winter and painted in the summer. From 1911 to 1913, he spent the winters in Paris, where he was admitted to the "Union internationale des beaux-arts et des lettres" in 1912. He took part in exhibitions in Munich (Glaspalast 1910, 1913, 1914, 1921, and 1925 and the spring exhibition of the Secession in 1913), Paris, Passau, Mannheim and Dresden and had been a member of the Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft (Munich artists' cooperative) since 1912. In 1915, Koeppel signed up as a war volunteer. He was initially a war painter in Russia and then an aircraft pilot. He was shot down thrice. The house in Waldhäuser became a meeting place for artist friends, including Alfred Kubin, who was a guest here for the first time in 1922. Koeppel, although a Protestant, campaigned for the construction of the Catholic mountain church Waldhäuser "Maria im Wald" and designed the winged altar for it with the image of "Maria with the Child". Between 1926 and 1930, he travelled to Austria, London, Paris, southern France, the Italian Riviera, Corsica, Switzerland and Spain. In 1930 he became seriously ill, whereupon the doctors banned him from painting, which he adhered to for a long time. In 1931, his pictures were shown in the Norishalle in Nuremberg, and again in Regensburg in 1933. When the illness progressed, he began painting again in 1945. In 1946 he was the senior in founding the Donau-Wald-Group artists' community. In 1947, he witnessed the opening of his great retrospective for his 60th birthday in Regensburg. Further artists and styles: Landscape, Oil painting, Graphic art, Print, Gouache, Mountains, Mountains, Workers, Forest
