RELIEF DEPICTING THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY - The Embden Collection England, probably Nottingham, second half of the 15th century. Alabaster carved in three-quarter relief with traces of polychrome paintwork. The crowned Mother of God is lifted into heaven by four angels in a cloth mandorla. Above is a bust of Christ flanked by two angels playing music. Mounted on a later wooden panel, partly covered with red velour. 49 × 26.5 cm. Various losses and repaired breaks. Paintwork heavily rubbed, only partially preserved. Provenance: The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France. A relief with a very similar depiction can be found in the V&A London (inv. no.
