Volume II of Buffon's complete works, from the Library of Charles NAYAY
Two thirds of the way through the book, under an engraving, a handwritten annotation by Charles NAYAY recalls its history: "Volume cut by a shell (25 May 1871) under the commune in a library, which was broken into pieces. École communale de jeunes filles rue de l'arbalète 41 in a flat I lived in with my children".
The binding is stitched with a commemorative gilt badge to commemorate the bank holidays and the distribution of flags by Jules Grévy (14 July 1880) and a Phrygian cap tie badge.
