Rembrandt HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN (1606-1669) Head studies (Saskia in the centre). 1636. Etching. 125 x 153 mm. Bartsch 365; New Hollstein 157. A good proof on thin cream mechanical laid paper (early 19th century Basan print), slightly "wigged" (the plate having shaken during the print run), with Watelet's retouching, perceptible scratches between the turbaned man and Saskia, trimmed at the plate cut. Oxidation of the folio. Two traces of mounting adhesive heavily oxidised on verso, visible in upper and lower left corners on recto. Short tear in the upper right corner above the figure. On verso, initials of Naudet, dealer at the Louvre and the date "1823" in sepia ink (Lugt 1937). Expert : Hélène BONAFOUS-MURAT
