Lot no. 3423
REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN
(Leiden 1606–1669 Amsterdam)
The pancake woman. 1635.
Etching on laid paper without watermark.
Signed and dated in the plate below the image: Rembrandt fec. 1635.
11.1 x 8.3 cm (Sheet size: 11.6 x 8.5 cm).
Provenance:
- Private collection, Switzerland.
Bartsch 124; Nowell-Usticke 124 (of III); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 144 II (of VII, with the fine lines between the hands of the woman and over the pan; before the cross-layers at the upper edge of the basket). - Outstanding, well-defined, even and high contrast lifetime impression. With a small to fine margin around the visible plate edge. A continuous framing line in pen and brown ink on the outer sheet margins. The paper is evenly lightly browned. The upper left corner has an old restoration, probably professional. Scattered tiny tears on the margins well beyond the plate edge. On the reverse is a thin spot and the left margin is partly reinforced with paper. With some traces of an old mounting. Overall in good condition. As an early state, very rare.
