Carayon). An original edition of only 100 copies on vellum, not sold. This poignant tribute by Ernest Renan to his sister, who died prematurely, was strictly reserved for his friends. A precious copy by the printer Jules Claye, later given to his friend Charles Rozan, with a signed autograph message in slightly poetic verse: Le voici ce morceau que tant tu désirais / Si tu n'étais Rozan, certes point ne l'aurais / Car j'y tenais, ami. But it is enough for you, Charles / To express a desire; as soon as you speak / My heart finds its joy in taking flight / Be happy this time: I offer you Renan. J. Cl. 15 June 1877. The volume appeared in the literary collection of the Marquis Emmanuel Du Bourg de Bozas Chaix d'Est-Ange (Cat.II, 1991, n° 425). A very fine copy, as issued, preserved in a book-box made by the bookbinder Émile Carayon. The luxury of the container contrasts pleasantly with the intended simplicity of the publication.
