This car, in good condition, has been in the hands of an enthusiast since 1966. A mechanical overhaul was carried out in 2020. The engine was rebored and the clutch redone in 2023. The exhaust is new. The ignition has been rebuilt (magneto). The upholstery is in good condition, with the exception of the translucent upholstery and the soft top.
A history of G I
On 3 April 1950, Mr Rouault, a garage owner in Le Pouliguen, Brittany, received a 1923 Renault MT in payment of bills that the owner was unable to settle. The garage owner kept the car for his daughter, who had taken a G I. Convinced that his daughter would come back, she would have this car. Time went by, the daughter didn't come back and Mrs Rouault realised that the car was taking the place of a boat or a caravan in the garage, which was now used for winter storage. She convinced her husband to sell the car. That's when the current owner stepped in. Thanks to this wise woman, he became the owner of the Renault MT on 23 July 1966. The car was driven back to Lyon on 4 August 1966, with its owner and a friend at the wheel. It covered the 720 km without any problems.
A complete mechanical and paintwork overhaul
In 1998, the owner had his Renault MT repainted, without disassembling the chassis, to mark the wedding of his first daughter. It was the Limonest bodybuilder who completed the job after in-house preparation. The overall appearance is fairly good, although the underbody now requires some work (replacement of the side box panels and treatment). There are also a few paint chips. In 2020, the Magneto was showing serious signs of weakness, with weak magnetisation, disappearing coils and the winding at an end. The right man for the job is in Beaulieu sur Loire. 2023, for its 100th birthday, the Renault refused to climb the slopes, the 3rd gear blew, the clutch was tired. The engine block is rebuilt by MV RECTIFICATION in Brignais to match the replaced pistons. The bore was increased from 58 mm to 59.20 mm. The engine was reassembled by ANIM'ANCIENNE, a car mechanic specialising in oldtimers who visits private customers. The compression ratio is 4.25 kg in each cylinder. The gearbox, transmission, rear axle and bearings were replaced with parts that the owner had meticulously kept. The pinion teeth on the replacement axle were ground. The leather clutch was changed, from DEPANOTO. The exhaust is rebuilt. Then the steering box was checked, the worm gear removed and refitted, and the timing adjusted. Note that there is still some play in the steering, which needs to be adjusted. For the time being, the car requires careful driving. The car is fitted with MICHELIN 4.75-16 tyres and matching rims, which means it is very close to the diameter of the original fitment with 715 x 115 beadlock rims. The 5 beadlock rims are available in their original juice. Note some deformation on the rim flanges.
An opportunity to enter the pre-war collection.
Here's a car to drive right away and enjoy the summer ahead. In the hands of a serious collector and member of the association that organises the EPOQAUTO show, it has a very interesting history dating back to 3 April 1950. Rarely has a popular car, such as this Renault MT, had such a history, for a 1923 car that celebrated its centenary last year.
The maintenance manual for 6 CV, Type MT and NN cars with front wheel brakes and a spare parts catalogue for 6 CV MT and NN cars will be supplied with the car.
This is the ideal affordable car, in very good mechanical condition, to take you back to the world of the pre-war years.
