In excellent condition. Engraved bookplate of Martin Winkler (by A. Kravchenko) inside upper flap. René Bull (1872-1942) was an Irish artist. He studied in Paris with the French caricaturist Caran d'Ache. From 1905, he illustrated books, starting with an edition of Jean de La Fontaine's fables. Among his other major works, he illustrated The Thousand and One Nights (1912), Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat (1913), The Russian Ballet (1913), Carmen (1915) and Andersen's fairy tales. Provenance: Martin Winkler (1893-1982), German cultural and art historian, professor, specialist in early Russian art, member of the German Society for Eastern European Studies.
