On this denarius, Marcus Junius Brutus recalls the title of his adoptive father Q. Servilius Cæpio, himself the legitimate son of Marcus Junius Brutus and Servilia Cæpionis, Julius Caesar's mistress. Despite the favours Caesar granted him, he retained his republican ideals and stabbed him for the last time on 15 March 44 BC. Pursued by Mark Antony after two consecutive defeats, he committed suicide on 23 October 42 BC. His death marked the end of the Roman Republic, leaving power divided between Octavian and Antony.
