Lot no. 35
[L'ANNÉE LITTÉRAIRE"] An important corpus of 712 handwritten articles and notes, published in "Lettres sur quelques écrits de ce temps" (1749-1754) and mainly in "L'Année Littéraire" (c. 1749-1790), offering an exceptional perspective on half a century of literary and artistic life. These are essentially clean copies of the articles, without erasures, and a few quick index cards, in sheet form or sewn into notebooks, in in-12 format.Launched in 1754, L'Année Littéraire is considered to be one of the major periodicals of the 18th century. Elie Fréron (1718-1776) was its founder and director until his death, and established himself as the leading pen of the anti-philosophical party. Numerous autograph articles by Fréron, relating roughly to the period 1767-1776; and much attention is paid to the work of his successors up to 1790, with particular emphasis on the great successes of the 1780s, such as Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782) and the Mémoires de Saint-Simon (1788). There are also preparatory notes and copies of articles. This corpus resembles a file compiled by collaborators, from which to draw. Of particular note are a commentary on Montesquieu's Esprit des Lois and a review of Mme de Graffigny's Lettres d'une Péruvienne by Abbé Joseph de la Porte; a few notes for the review of Fontanelle, Ericie ou la Vestale, etc. (See Jean Balcou, Le Dossier Fréron, Genève, Droz, 1975).Minor scratches, some wetness and small brown spots in the margins of a few issues.Expert: Ségolène Beauchamp
