REYNAUD LEVIEUX
(Nîmes, 1613 - Rome, 1699)
Still life with fish, vegetables, mushrooms and game
Oil on canvas, 134X184.5 cm
Provenance:
Private collection
The painting presents an exuberant composition of fruits, fish and vegetables placed in bulk on different perspective planes. The warm-coloured brushstrokes are made brilliant in some passages by the play of light, skilfully imitating the reverberation of surfaces, offering the viewer a realistic and vivid mimesis of nature in pose. These characters, the quality of execution and some passages suggest attribution to the little-known Reynaud Le Vieux, whose production of still lifes was recently reconstructed by Alberto Crispo. The painter, trained in the family workshop, was in Rome by 1643 when his presence in his native city is documented, before moving to Montpellier in 1647 and again to Avignon.
We thank Alberto Crispo for the attribution.
