The landscape and marine painter was trained by his father Hermann Eschke and studied at the academies in Berlin and Munich as well as under Friedrich Kallmorgen in Karlsruhe. In 1898/99 a study visit to the Calarossi School in Paris encouraged him in his open-air painting.
