RIMBAUD Arthur (1854-1891). Les Illuminations. Notice par Paul Verlaine. Paris, Publications de la Vogue, 1886: in-8, black jansenist morocco, ribbed spine, salmon box lining and endpapers, gilt edges, salmon cover, black morocco spine and flaps folder lined with black suede, slipcase (P. L. Martin). First edition with a preface by Paul Verlaine, comprising forty-six pieces, thirteen of which are in verse. Rimbaud, who was away in Abyssinia at the time, may never have been aware of them. The manuscript went through many changes before coming into the possession of Gustave Kahn, who first published it in La Vogue in 1886, the year in which this volume appeared. One of 30 copies on Japon imperial paper, the only large paper to accompany the 170 of the current edition on fine laid paper. Copy of Édouard Dujardin, with a handwritten note signed and dated 1922: "Édition originale des Illuminations. A copy given to me at the time of publication by the publishers Gustave Kahn and Félix Fénéon (...) This is one of the great moments of Symbolism! Exquisite binding of simple refinement, a perfect copy in every respect. - From the collection of Fred Feinsilber, 2006, no. 108, with bookplate.
