Lot no. 185
RIMBAUD Arthur (1854-1891). Reliquaire, poems. Paris, Léon Genonceaux, 1892; in-12, bradel of water-green moiré paper, old red parts, cover (P. Goy). First edition published in November 1891. The volume contains 52 poems, 19 of which are unpublished and 4 apocryphal.
Resale copy, after the lawsuit over the preface by Rodolphe Darzens: "in his haste to see the publishing project come to fruition, had the collection printed without submitting the proofs to Darzens. He alone had chosen the title Reliquaire (...). He had finally annoyed him by using as a preface the scattered notes that Darzens intended to edit". (Galantaris). The publisher was ordered to seize the 119 copies still in stock, from which the preface and the title page dated 1891 that mentioned it were removed.
☞ This copy has the particularity of having the 1892 title page, but of having kept the preface by Darzens, which provides "first-hand information on Rimbaud, sometimes raw, spontaneously thrown onto the paper and not watered down by a rewriting of propriety" (Id.)
