Lot no. 55
RIMBAUD (Arthur). A Season in Hell. Brussels, Alliance typographique (M.-J. Poot & Cie), 1873. In-12, paperback, untrimmed, red half-maroquin folder and slipcase (Tchékéroul). A rare and sought-after first edition of the only collection of poems published by Rimbaud himself, printed in Belgium at an author's expense at 450 or 500 copies, without large papers.
As the young poet was unable to pay the printer, he was only able to withdraw half a dozen copies; he left one at the Petits-Carmes prison for Verlaine and distributed the others to friends. The rest of the print run remained in Jacques Poot's office, where it would not be found, intact, until the early twentieth century.
A perfectly preserved copy as issued, in a remarkably fine slipcase signed by Vladimir Tchékéroul.
