2 vol. gr. in-8 (25,2 × 17 cm), the first in bradel of black moiré cloth, illustrated cover preserved (AD. Lavaux rel.), the second in paperback, illustrated cover filled.
First edition of this diptych commissioned by Samuel Bing to celebrate the opening of his Art Nouveau gallery on 26 December 1895. Les Vierges is illustrated with 4 out-of-text lithographs in colour by Joseph Rippl-Ronai and Les Tombeaux with 3 woodcuts in black by James Pitcairn-Knowles.
A very fine set illustrated by two close friends of the Nabis circle. The fragile Ingres paper dust jackets, each illustrated with a different woodcut by James Pitcairn-Knowles, have been preserved.
