First edition of this diptych commissioned by Samuel Bing to celebrate the opening of his Art Nouveau gallery on 26 December 1895. Les Vierges is illustrated with 4 out-of-text lithographs in colour by Joseph Rippl-Ronai and Les Tombeaux with 3 woodcuts in black by James Pitcairn-Knowles. A very fine set illustrated by two close friends of the Nabis circle. The fragile Ingres paper dust jackets, each illustrated with a different woodcut by James Pitcairn-Knowles, have been preserved.
