Portrait of a Gentleman Roman school, early 17th century oil on canvas 56 x 47 cm The painting depicts a half-length gentleman, caught frontally with his gaze turned towards the observer. The effigy wears a dark suit enlivened by the broad white stiff collar, a typical element of aristocratic and upper-class fashion in the early 17th century. The sober rendering of the compositional layout, combined with the intense characterisation of the physiognomy, gives the work considerable expressive force. The work appears to be attributable to the Roman school of the early 17th century and shows interesting stylistic affinities with the portraiture of Giovanni Baglione (Rome, 1566 - 1643), particularly in the luministic construction of the face, the psychological definition of the character and the calibrated essentiality of the dark background, which accentuates the plastic presence of the figure. The pictorial drafting, soft but attentive to physiognomic details, together with the restrained colour range and delicate chiaroscuro modulation, suggest a figurative culture updated on the modes of Roman naturalism of the first decades of the 17th century.Within the 19th century frame.
