Lot no. 322
Robert INDIANA (né en 1928)* LOVE, 1966-1998 Sculpture en aluminium polychrome. Blue faces, Red sides Polychrome aluminum sculpture. édition AP 2/4, from an ed of 6 + 4 AP's 91,5 x 91,5 x 45,75 cm - 36 x 36 x 18 in. Student at the John Herron Art Institute in 1945 and 1946 and later at the Chicago Art Institute, Robert Indiana is a central member of the American Pop Art Movement. His "Pop" style fits with art critic Pierre Restany's definition: "A distinctively American language based on the meaning of modern nature and this modern nature was above all conditioned by North American phenomenon". Indiana participated in the historic "New Realists" exhibition in New York in 1962, bringing together a significant section of international artists exploring this modern urban folklore. His art then took new directions, using letters and numbers exclusively. He is famous for his "LOVE" images, undoubtedly the best known Pop Art motif in the world. The "LOVE" image was inspired by a religious a poster in the Christian Science Church in Indianapolis, marked "God is LOVE". Indiana's "LOVE" therefore connotes fundamentally universal values. Nevertheless, Indiana cuts the word in half, piling the LO on the VE. His manner of presenting the word is unfamiliar, forcing the viewer to examine its meaning on a personal level. The artist's representational system is based on emotional symbols linked directly to the American experience and mythology. Created during the Vietnam War, "LOVE" also symbolises peace and hope during a moment in American history touched by doubt and even violence. "LOVE," a study of abstract forms, colour and language remains the most disseminated image in the world, almost better known than the artist himself. The "LOVE" sculpture, with its weight and imposing size, denotes all of the comforts of our consumer culture as well as its contradictions. The force of Indiana's art lies in its refined and geometric qualities, a simplicity that lends the work an evocative force. The four letters, stacked and unified, make reference to religion, politics and the human condition, a commentary that is still relevant in 2006. A larger version of our sculpture can be found in Manhattan, at the corner of 56th street and the Avenue of the Americas. Works by Robert Indiana are conserved at the Museum of Modern Art, New York ; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston ; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. and at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
