Les nombres sont partout autour de nous ; ils influencent nos vies autant que les mots. Ils appartiennent au langage universel qui lie les hommes entre eux. Pour Robert Indiana, les nombres ont toujours joué un rôle essentiel dans sa vie. « D'après mes parents, j'ai appris les nombres avant l'alphabet. La fermeté de cette relation vient de la nature itinérante de ma famille » (extrait d'un interview avec l'artiste). Connu essentiellement pour être le peintre des « symboles américains », Indiana travaille par séries - variations sur des thèmes variés. On le considère souvent comme facilement compréhensible, grâce à ses formes lisibles, graphiques mais ses œuvres sont faussement simples. Elles sont complexes dans leur structure et dans leur signification. A partir d'une gravure sur les dix étapes de la vie d'un homme, Indiana a créé la monumentale série NUMBER qui reprend chaque étape, différant par les associations de couleurs. De là, le numéro ONE est essentiel puisqu'il représente le premier stade de la vie - la Naissance. Comme il fut réalisé au même moment que la série de peintures LOVE, faites en rouge, bleu et vert, il en hérita des couleurs primaires rouge et bleu. En tant qu'artiste pop, les couleurs sont bien sûr capitales dans le travail d'Indiana. Artiste intellectuel et individualiste, Indiana ne croit pas au hasard lorsqu'il s'agit de nombres. Il croit sincèrement que chaque chiffre a sa propre signification qu'il respecte profondément. Comme beaucoup de mathématiciens, il aborde les chiffres de façon à la fois pratique et sensible. Ces NUMBERS, comme des mots, sont en eux-mêmes un objet et un symbole. Ils représentent, d'après Indiana, le « verbal-visuel », notion d'une valeur capitale dans son œuvre. Numbers belong to the universal language that connects us all. For Robert Indiana, numbers have always played a seminal role in his life. "As recollected by my parents, numbers came before the alphabet. My firmest association came as a result of my family's roving nature."(cited from an interview with the artist). Prominently known for being a painter of 'American signs,' Indiana works in series which consist of variations of various themes. Often viewed as easily comprehensible, due to an immediate readability and the hard-edge graphic forms, these works are misleading. They are complex both in structure and in meaning. Inspired from a print given to the artist, based on the ten stages of a man's life, Indiana created the monumental NUMBER series to correlate to each stage, with various colour combinations. The number ONE is therefore a significant part of this series as it represents the primary stage of a human's life-Birth. Realised at the same moment in time as Indiana was involved in the birth of the LOVE paintings, which were initially red, blue and green, the number therefore assumed the primary colours of red and blue. As an pop artist, the colours are an essential part of Indiana's work. A reflective and self-aware artist, Indiana does not believe in chance or hazard when it comes to the numbers. It is his belief that each number has a certain significance and deeper meaning, which he genuinely respects and loves. Like many mathematicians, Indiana follows numbers in both a practical and emotional manner. "With the knowledge of an underlying logic, a fundamental truth, to numbers as well as letters, these numbers are more than symbols they are actual physical entities that bring to life their full potency."(Adrian Dannatt, cited in ex. cat Robert Indiana: Paseo de Recoletos y Paseo del Prado, Madrid 2006) These NUMBERS like words become both an object and a sign. They are, according to Indiana "the verbal-visual," something of great value in his œuvre.
