As a painter, he mainly created flowers and landscapes with strong colouring, and as a graphic artist he created, among other things, several lithography cycles (including "Hamlet", "Macbeth", "Simplicissimus", "Der Traum ein Leben"). Kohl was not accepted by the Vienna Academy and then took drawing and painting classes in Vienna. In 1912 and 1913, he briefly studied at the Prague Art Academy under August Brömse. From 1913 to 1916, he lived in Leipzig. In 1918, after military service, he returned to Vienna, from 1919 to 1923 he was back in Leipzig, from 1923 to 1924 in Frankfurt/Main and then again in Vienna. Until 1923, Kohl worked primarily as a graphic artist, and around 1915 he created his first oil paintings. In 1919, he took part in the summer exhibition "The New Eye" in the House of Young Artists in Vienna; between 1919 and 1924, he exhibited in Leipzig and Dresden. He also created illustrations for German publishers. Represented in the Hagenbund for the first time in 1921, again in 1930 and 1936, and became a member of the Hagenbund in 1937/1938. In 1931/1932, he exhibited at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. In 1938/1939, Kohl emigrated to Paris. Before he could further emigrate to the USA, he was arrested by henchmen of the Vichy regime in the unoccupied part of France and taken to the Blechhammer concentration camp, where he was murdered in 1944.
