Robert Kummer, der an der Akademie in Dresden sowie bei Johann Christian Dahl ausgebildet wurde, zählt zu den bedeutendsten Dresdener Maler des 19. Jahrhunderts. In der realitätsnahen Darstellung verschiedener Landschaften, die den Großteil seines Werks ausmachen, legte er besonderes Gewicht auf die Gestaltung des Himmels und der Wolken sowie die Wiedergabe des Lichts. Konzentrierte sich Kummer zunächst auf Ansichten aus der Sächsischen Schweiz, so erweiterten zahlreiche Reisen u.a. nach Italien, Slowenien, Schottland und Portugal sein Motivrepertoire beträchtlich. Unser großformatiges Gemälde zeigt eine weite Landschaft in der italienisch-slowenischen Grenzregion mit dem Blick auf das Neue Schloss von Duino bei Triest. Nach diesem Schloss sind die zehn berühmten Elegien benannt, die Rainer Maria Rilke 1912 bei einem Aufenthalt als Gast der Gräfin Marie von Thurn und Taxis (geb. Signed lower right: R. Kummer. Robert Kummer learnt to paint at the Dresden Academy under Johann Christian Dahl, and was among the most important painters in Dresden in the 19th century. In the realistic depictions of landscapes that make up the majority of his oeuvre, he paid particular attention to the rendering of the sky, the clouds, and the light. In his early phase, Kummer mainly concentrated on the landscapes of Saxon Switzerland, but several sojourns to Italy, Slovenia, Scotland, Portugal, and other places extended his repertoire considerably. This large format work depicts a landscape of the border region between Italy and Slovenia with a view of the new palace of Duino near Triest.
