Room IX of the Gallerie dell'Accademia - the most important collection of Venetian and Veneto art from the 14th to the 18th century - is dedicated to the comprimarios who, also active in the Mainland, in the wake of Bellini and Palma il Vecchio and alongside Titian, drew the new panorama of lagoon painting in the early 16th century: Lorenzo Lotto, Palma il Vecchio and Rocco Marconi.
It is precisely to Rocco Marconi's catalogue that the "remarkable panel" under examination belongs, "already in England in the Conolly collection, exhibited in 1908 at the Royal Academy in London and in 1922 at the National Gallery of Ireland, and which appeared at auction - with attribution to Giorgione - in London in 1960" (Dal Pozzolo 1997a).
