Lot no. 328
Rodolphe SCHÖNBERG (1901-1944) Set of 3 seascapes, oil on canvas marouflaged on panel, signed lower right, one dated 1923, 30 x 38 cm, 21 x 25 cm and 29 x 35 cm, one drawing of a man with glasses signed R Schonberg and dated 1919. Note: Rodolphe Schönberg was a Belgian artist who was born in Brussels in 1901 and died in Schaerbeek in 1944. He was a painter, watercolourist, draughtsman, graphic artist and engraver. He studied at the Brussels Academy and later became a pupil of Kurt Peiser and Gerard Jacobs. He produced cityscapes, landscapes, river and harbour views and still lifes. His drawing was realistic. From 1923, he often worked in Zeeland and made voyages on Zeeland waters with his ship. He often stayed in Veere and managed to capture the atmosphere of the town beautifully in his work. The fishermen, the harbour, the people, the ships and the many monuments were his inspiration. He took part in an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1928 and was described by the art critic C. Veth as a "painter of race". In 1930, he became a member of the Belgian Society of Sea Painters. From the start of the Second World War, he was active in the Resistance and Les Temps Nouveaux. On 22 June 1941, he disappeared illegally. Political secretary for Walloon Brabant under the name Grégoire, he was arrested by the Gestapo on 13 May 1944 and executed around July 1944. His work can be found at the Print Room in Brussels, among other places. He is mentioned in BAS I and Deux siècles de signatures d'artistes belges. (piron).
